WELCOME SHANNON

Shannon (left) and Freya.

Last week room 11 welcomed Shannon to our class. Shannon is a year 6 student who is blind. This afternoon Alison Prskawetz, a manager with the Blind and Low Vision Education Network of New Zealand (BLENNZ), visited room 11 to teach the students about sighted guide and braille.

Sighted guide is what a person with sight can use when they are assisting a visually impaired or blind person. All the students in room 11 had a turn being blind folded and guided around a part of the school by a buddy.

After that Alison taught room 11 about the braille alphabet. Braille is a code that is used by visually impaired and blind people to read words, text and numbers. All the students decoded a braille joke and wrote their favourite sport in braille using mini M & M's. Shannon then checked their braille to make sure that it was correct.
