INQUIRY

Yesterday room 11 continued their mini inquiry into Olympic mascots. We began the session by exploring the 5 Olympic values:
  • Joy of effort
  • Fair play
  • Respect for others
  • Pursuit of excellence
  • Balance between mind and body
We then examined the various features of the London Olympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville.
Wenlock wears 5 bracelets that correspond to the 5 Olympic rings. He has 3 points on his head that symbolise the 3 podiums of the winners and the shape of his head is the shape of the London Olympic stadium.
Mandeville wears a pink watch timed 0:20:12, the 3 points on his head represent 'agitos', which is the symbol of the Paralympic Games.

Afterwards we talked about the important roles that a mascot needs to fulfill at the Olympic Games these include: representing the cultural heritage of the city that is representing the Games, representing the Olympic values and spirit and creating a festive atmosphere at the Olympics.

Room 11 then set about creating their own mascots for the London Olympics. Their mascots needed to include the following features:
  • Embrace 2 or more Olympic values
  • Include the London Olympic logo
  • Represent London/England in some manner
  • Include symbols associated with the Olympic Games
