The Sacking of Kororareka
This week room 15 have been writing fictional eyewitness accounts of The Battle of Kororareka. First we learnt about the important role that Kororareka (present day Russell) played in New Zealand's history just before and after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed.
On 11th March 1845 a battle broke out between Hone Heke's men and the British troops that was so severe that all British settlers were evacuated to ships anchored in Kororareka's bay. The battle caused the British garrison's ammunition store to explode setting many nearby buildings ablaze. A last gasp bombardment by the British battle ship 'Hazard' could not prevent Hone Heke and his warriors from being victorious.
We published our eyewitness accounts on overhead transparency plastic and they are displayed in the windows or room 15. Some people also drew a graphic representation of their eyewitness accounts.
