Science & Technology Challenge

This week’s science & technology challenge involved retrieving a balloon from across a 3-metre gap.

The students were presented with the scenario that they were trapped in the wild country and could not cross a deep stream in their path. To make matters worse the balloon they had just inflated to send a message on had blown away from a group member’s hand and had landed on a bush across a canyon. They needed to retrieve the balloon before another gust of wind blew it away!

Each group had 20 minutes to build a device using only 10 full sheets of newspaper, 1 metre of sellotape, and 6 metres of string. Although the designs were very inventive and employed different retrieval techniques unfortunately none of the groups were able to retrieve the balloon. Looks like they’ll have to spend a night or two in the bush!
