WORLD OF WASTE TRIP

Last week some members of room 15 who are part of the Schoolgen Lead Team went on a WOW (World of Waste) trip.

We got to go to the Silverstream landfill, the Earthlink Recycling Plant, The Dowse Art Gallery and the Waste Management Recycling Plant.

The trip was loads of fun and we enjoyed learning where the waste that we create at home and at school ends up when we put it in the bin or recycle it. We even got to keep a toy or book for free from the Earthlink shop!

It was a great experience for everyone and probably the best trip ever!

SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES

Last Friday room 15 and the year 5/6 syndicate took part in a beach clean-up as part of a presentation from the Sustainable Coastlines Organisation.

After walking from the Eastbourne community pool to Windy point and back members of room 15 and 16 had pick up 3 sacks full of rubbish! We were then treated to a insightful presentation called 'Love Your Coast', which introduced the effects of rubbish on marine life and talked about simple steps that everyone can take to prevent rubbish reaching our coastlines.

CATAPULT CRAZINESS

This week room 15 launched some catapults that they made out of 10 rubber bands, 2 pieces of A4 card, 20 pieces of newsprint paper, 10 straws and 20 popsicle sticks.

The class was split up into 5 teams and in our groups we had to use the materials above to build a catapult that would launch a tennis ball.

There were some amazing catapults but the most successful catapult was in the shape of a triangle so when the tennis ball was launched it went higher and further than the other catapults.

Before we made our catapults we look at the different types of catapults that were used in battle and we watched a video clip of the magonel catapult in action. The magonel took 4 minutes to re-load so in war you would launch a projectile then take another 4 minutes to launch another projectile.

MYSTIC ROSE

Over the last couple of weeks the members of room 15 have been creating mathematical patterns known as a mystic rose.

The patterns are created by placing points evenly around the circumference of a circle and then linking the points up using straight lines.

A mystic rose can simple and quite complicated depending on the amount of points you choose to place around the circumference. How many lines do you think you might need to draw a 20 point mystic rose?

Term 4 Inquiry
CATAPULT SYSTEMS

This term room 15 are inquiring into catapult systems. We began our inquiry by painting the walls of our classroom with our understanding of what catapults are, when they were used and how they work.

Using books, rulers and erasers we examined the basic elements of a catapult (lever, fulcrum, load force, effort force).

Plays/Scripts

In the second to last week of this term we had to make up our own plays scripts during literacy.  There was about 5-6 people in a group.

Some of the plays were called ‘Hotel Trouble’, ‘Magic Portal’, ‘My Kitchen Sucks’, ‘Stranded on an Island’ and ‘Stereotypes Basketball’.

We had about 2-3 days to write our scripts and also to make or get the props.. Some were good and others had a weird plot.

Parodies
At the end of term 3 room 15 got into groups of four or less and began to make parodies. First we chose a song and printed out the lyrics. Then we started to find rhythms and patterns. After that we started to make up some new lyrics for the song. We parodied half of the song, then wen sung it in front of the class. A few days later we completed our song, and recorded it with the class i-Pod. After that the class voted which were the three best songs, and then we had a sing off against room16!

I Need A Plumber
(sung to the tune of 'We are the Champions' by Queen)
I Pooed in my pants time after time
The toilet blocked up but it committed no crime
& bad accidents,
I’ve made a few
Because I gave the toilet too much poo!
But now I’ve come through

Cause I need a plumber from France,
And he’ll keep on plumbing till the end
I need a plumber
I need a plumber
No time for waiting
Cause I need a plumber

I’ve waited to much,
For a plumber to come.
I guess I’ll just have to get the job over and done
I don’t mind at all

But its been no easy job,
No pleasure cruise
Its to big of a challenge
I’ll just have to lose

Cause I need a plumber from France,
And he’ll keep on plumbing till the end
I need a plumber
I need a plumber,
No time for waiting cause I need a plumber from France!
The toilet blocked up but it committed no crime
& bad accidents,
I’ve made a few
Because I gave the toilet too much poo!
But now I’ve come through

Cause I need a plumber from France,
And he’ll keep on plumbing till the end
I need a plumber
I need a plumber
No time for waiting
Cause I need a plumber
