CHINDOGU

Recently in room 15 the students have been writing instructions for an gadget that they have each created based on Chindogu: The Japanese Art of making Unuseless Inventions.

Toast Glasses

Chindogu means unusual tool. They are everyday gadgets that are ideal for solving very specific problems. However, Chindogu have no use at all because the gadgets would either cause new problems, be embarrassing to use, or just plain not be practical. They are often described as “unuseless” as they really do solve a problem but there’s something else that prevents them from being put into practical use.

Pedal Ready

PEDAL READY

On Tuesday room 15 participated in the Pedal Ready programme. Pedal Ready is an organisation that teaches children how to cycle safely on the road.

We practiced a variety of cycling techniques that included indicating, emergency stopping, avoiding obstacles and using gears properly.

Everybody enjoyed the day and we now know how to cycle safely on the road.

RUBE GOLDBERG EXPLANATIONS

During literacy room 15 have been learning how to write explanations. To inspire us we looked at the wacky explanations created by the American cartoonist Rube Goldberg

After creating a success criteria for writing an explanation, we talked about how Rube Goldberg's explanations explained how to do an easy everyday activity in a very complicated manner. With this in mind everyone set about selecting a simple activity and complicating it through a series of different steps.

CATAPULT MODELS

Recently room 15 have been building model catapults as part of their inquiry into catapult systems.

The catapults we built were made out of popsicle sticks, masking tape and paper. The catapults were purposefully built to launch marshmallows.

After we had finished constructing our catapults we went outside and tested their effectiveness with some marshmallows.

CATAPULT TESTING

Last week room 15 tested the modifications they had made to their model catapults.

First we decided upon the main variables of a catapult that effect the distance a projectile travels. These variables are lever length, mass of projectile and the angle of the lever arm.

Each group chose one variable to modify on their catapults and then tested the modifications to see whether it made a difference to the distance their projectile fired. The results of the testing were mapped on a graph.
