POST-IT ARTWORK

Post-it note artwork has been popularised in the last decade with many installations appearing in office building windows and even in the windows of Te Papa.

This week during our art session room 11 decided to create their own Post-it note installation to liven up our class windows.

We began by using a visiting a cool website called 'Post'it art creator'. This website help us to design our creations we then set about arranging our designs in the window panes on both sides of room 11.

We're pretty sure Arthur Fry would be proud of the results.

SWIMMING SPORTS

This week the year 5/6 syndicate held its swimming sports competition. It was wonderful to see everyone who participated put in a huge amount of effort to represent Muritai School at the Central Zone Swimming Sports.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to room 11 members Amy, Samantha and Emma whose efforts have been recognised by being included in the year 5 and 6 swim squads to compete at the Central Zone Swimming Championship. Good luck girls!

SEARCHING THE INTERNET

Effectively searching the internet for information is a skill many of us need to refine.

Today room 11 spent some time searching for effective methods to help refine our internet searching abilities. At first we found a variety of methods and recorded those on post-it notes we then collated these methods into a list, here's what we found...

Using our newly acquired skills room 11 then set about researching future predictions on the internet. We first looked at an article on BBC Future about what might happen in 10, 50, 100 and 150 years from now. The list was complied according to predictions from scientists, thinkers and pundits, such predictions include;

MOST LIKELY
  • 2017 Your computer has a sense of smell (1/1000)
  • 2030 Many commercial flights take place without pilots (3/1)
  • 2050 Wealthy people will be able to select elements of their offspring's genetic makeup (1/8)
   LEAST LIKELY
  • 2017 People can touch one another through their phones (100/1)
  • 2024 You can upload the contents of your brain onto your computer (100/1)
  • 2062 The first cloned humans have appeared (33/1)

RECOUNTS
This week room 11 have begun to write recounts about finding something valuable. To begin with room 11 created the above mind map using My Thoughts to record all their ideas about recounts.

We then watched a video clip about Ken Wilman whose dog, Madge, discovered a hard, soccer ball-sized piece of Ambergris on Morecambe beach in northern England. Ambergris, also known as whale vomit, is a valuable substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales that was historically used in perfumery.

The students then set about planning an experience about an occasion when they found something of worth.

Here are a couple of the finished recounts...

Cloud Heaven
“I’m just going to look in the cereal aisle”, I said to my mum as I kicked my brother in the shin because he had decided to wear his Barbie bikini to the supermarket.

I ran down the cereal aisle looking for the Taco’s. Tac‘o’s are my favourite type of cereal, each ‘o’ tastes like a taco. Ah, there they are, I said to myself. I reached out and grabbed the plainest box I saw. I ran back to the trolley gave my brother a second kick and handed my mum the cereal box.

When the lady at the checkout scanned the Tac’o’s her pupils grew big as she looked at the computer screen. “You have just won yourself a trip to America!” exclaimed the lady.

I think I was really lucky to have grabbed exactly the right Tac’o’s box. Lastly, my brother now wears a rainbow monkey bikini.

My Jungle Adventure!

I was exploring in the jungle slashing away at the vines and roots. I wasn’t looking at the ground and before I knew it I was lying face down in the leaves and dirt…

“Ow” I said out loud, I rubbed my nose, I had skidded a bit, my nose hurt as well as my whole face. I slowly looked up and WOW! I exclaimed because right there in front of me was a giant ruby glistening.

Once I had hacked my way out of the jungle, I choose a jeweller, called Joe Pin, and claimed my 5 million dollars in one-dollar notes of course!

Now I have retired and live in a big house with a pool and everything! Thanks to that rock that made me fall over I have lots and lots and lots of dollar notes!

STRIKE IT OUT
Today during maths room 11 learnt how to play ‘Strike it Out’. Strike it Out is a game where you create equations by adding and/or subtracting two numbers on a number line.

On a number line, labeled from 1-20, you circle the product of your equation then your opponent must add or subtract with the number you circled and then cross it out.

The object of the game is to leave your opponent with no possible moves.

ADAM PAGE

Adam with his mini electric guitar complete with a furry pink guitar strap
This afternoon room 11 and the year 5/6 syndicate were treated to the musical talents of multi-instrumentalist Adam Page.

Using everyday objects and some of the student's names Adam spontaneously composed a range of grooves in many different styles into his loop pedals. Adam demonstrated how simple objects such as a toothbrush can be utilised as a musical instrument.

Check out the video below in which Adam turns Bennett Parker's name into a smash hit.

If you want to have a go at creating your own music using loops check out the cool website below.

Notices
There will be a lot of notices sent home over the next few weeks e.g. sports and camp notices. It will be important for the students to return any slips as soon as possible.
  • Homework The Y5/6 syndicate homework has been sent out today.
  • Hats It’s term 1 and each child needs a hat to wear everyday outside. It needs to be a wide brimmed hat, not a cap and ideally should be left at school in their desk for easy access. Thank you to those students who have remembered. Students not wearing hats have to stay in the shade area by the junior rooms.
  • PE Shed The PE shed will be open every lunchtime (weather permitting). The PE shed door will be open and the PE shed monitors will work from inside the shed. The equipment needs to be returned by those who took it out, which has been an issue in the past. Students who don't return their gear will be given a chance BUT after they have used it up they will not be able to take PE gear out for a period of time (TBC).
Sport
  • Milo Cricket: Mr McMillan will have a meeting tomorrow for all those who are interested in playing cricket, boys and girls.
  • Touch Rugby: Mr Chadwick has asked that all touch rugby notices and money be returned to the office by Thursday this week.

And so it begins...
The wet weather at the beginning of the week has not dampened room 11's start to the year in fact its been quite the opposite we've got off to a superb start.

With the classroom looking rather bland we set about painting the walls to add a splash of colour to our classroom.

We started swimming lessons and performing arts today as well as singing with Mrs. Hook.
